Q. Does a Certified Debt Specialist obtain a written settlement agreement once an agreement has been reached?

 

A: Absolutely. All settlements are in writing. This avoids potential issues that may arise in the future for clients. If you are negotiating a settlement on your own, never pay a settlement until you have a written settlement agreement from the collector or creditor. Never – means never. We have heard many horror stories where people paid a settlement and only obtained a verbal agreement and then found themselves pursued for the balance years later. Keep all written settlement agreements for at least 10 years along with a copy of proof of payment. Better yet trust a Professional Debt Arbitrator to protect your interests.
